The sunshine state may be sunny, but it isn’t all that warm. The past few days have seen freezing temperatures, which has caused for some changes at the theme parks. Most notably Disney, where Blizzard Beach is seeing some closures (Dec. 7), as well as the Spirit of Aloha dinner show. This dinner show is held twice nightly and is located at an outdoor venue. With the colder weather and the sun setting earlier, guests would not be comfortable, and therefore Disney may cancel the show as they did on December 7. These cancellations are on a day-to-day determination, so make sure you call and ask before making arrangements. They will, of course, help you book other arrangements, but it is best to plan ahead and avoid that hassle.
Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is ‘closed for refurbishment’ through December 31, 2010, which makes sense to perform maintenance during the year that sees its fewest visitors. Instead of closures, some Disney parks are having “Extra Magic Hours” so be sure to check their web site for park hours and updates. Most are staying open later during the holidays, especially on the weekends.
Universal Studios also has extended hours for the next few weekends closing at 10pm instead of 7pm or 8pm. Sea World is open until 11pm during the month of December, but if you wait until January, their park closes at 6pm.
Despite the cold weather, it really is a great time to visit Florida and our theme parks. The festive atmosphere goes a long way to warm us all!
