Water Parks

The Orlando area has six water parks, each with its own unique attributes.

The International drive area has Wet ‘n’ Wild, the oldest water park in Orlando. If you are looking for a water park for thrills then Wet ‘n’ Wild is your choice. They have the wildest rides and constantly add new rides. Wet ‘n’ Wild closed at the end of 2016. It held the honor of being the best water park in Orlando for many years. It was located on International Drive and was easily accessible from the Interstate and to that popular tourist district. When Universal Studios purchased this Orlando water park, they planned to close it and create an all-new water experience. They have done just that. Volcano Bay is now open (different location, although nearby) and is getting a lot of attention.

Aquatica and Discovery Cove also in the International Drive resort area offer milder choices than Wet ‘n’ Wild did, but more relaxing and water rides you won’t see anywhere else. Aquatica is a great park and Sea World’s unique ability to combine sea creatures on rides is astonishing. Now the interaction at Aquatica does not even come close to Discovery Cove – an attraction that’s not all about rides. The dolphin experience is truly the best thing I have ever done at a theme/water park. They have two options; one with the Dolphin encounter and the other without. It’s the most expensive and exclusive of all the parks in Orlando. Capacity is an issue so I’d suggest booking this experience as far in advance as possible.

The Walt Disney World Resort has two water parks Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. It’s pretty obvious what type of experiences the parks offer – Blizzard Beach, mountainous and snowy, while Typhoon Lagoon offers a stormy thrill.

Further away from Orlando, in Winter Haven, the 6th water park in Central Florida offers a cool way to beat the heat in the summer months at Legoland. This water attraction has limited openings, especially in the winter months.

Walt Disney World’s Blizzard Beach

Always imaginative, the Disney folks came up with a water park that looks cool even before you get in the water.  Blizzard Beach appears to have been blanketed in several feet of snow.  But besides the fun looks of this park, there is fun for all ages, from the little ones to those brave enough to go down the 13-story log flume, and everyone in between.

Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon Lagoon is a creatively themed as an area once hit by a major storm.  “Mount Mayday” is the source of many waterslides.  Besides the many water slides and fun for all ages, Typhoon Lagoon also is home to Shark Reef, where you can snorkel or dive with schools of tropical fish and sharks! .
