Spotlight: Mythos Restaurant at Islands of Adventure

Mythos Restaurant at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure was named the world’s best theme park restaurant for six years running. And, they just won again at the 2011 Foodie Awards. This unique restaurant is located in the area of the lost city of Atlantis, and is one of only 2 full-service restaurants inside the park. The exterior of towering rock formations with carved ancient figures, and cascading waterfalls set the mood for this dining experience. Inside, you’ll enjoy the cavernous interior in what appears to be an enchanted cave, the walls of which morph from rocky surfaces to mystical faces and even into voluptuous bodies. And, there’s an outdoor seating area with a spectacular view of the park’s sea and islands.

The menu consists of an eclectic assortment of food, ranging from hamburgers to sushi. The gourmet cuisine includes blueberry and pistachio crusted grilled pork, cedar planked Bay of Fundy salmon, and imported pasta. Mouth-watering desserts and a full wine list are also available, as well as a separate children’s menu. A full-service lunch is served daily. The food is great, prices reasonable, and atmosphere pleasant.

Universal does offer a dining pass deal, which allows guests to enter the park to dine at the restaurant without paying for admission. Here’s how it works: go to the guest services window and tell them you’d like to dine at Mythos. They’ll ask for a photo id and a credit card. They’ll ring up a charge ticket for the full park admission and give you a pass to enter the park and go to the restaurant. When you’re finished, you present the pass and proof that you purchased a meal at Mythos and they tear up your credit slip. They give you about 2 ½ hours. So, that’s a great way to enjoy the restaurant even if you are not visiting the theme park, enjoy!

Spotlight: Rainforest Café at Downtown Disney

Well, it’s a jungle out there, especially if you’re dining at the popular Rainforest Café at Downtown Disney. This restaurant is wildly decorated with lush tropical vegetation.  It even has banyan trees and waterfalls! Just to make sure you feel like you’re in the actual rainforest, there are simulated thunderstorms, trumpeting elephants, gorillas, and animated animals roaming around.

Along with the ambiance, you’ll enjoy a variety of American fare, from salads and sandwiches to burgers, poultry dishes, as well as vegetarian selections and kid-friendly meals.  The ‘Best of Citysearch’ even voted The Rainforest Café best family-friendly restaurant of 2006.  So, enjoy a great meal, but leave room for dessert.  Their signature dish is the Sparkling Volcano, which is a chocolate brownie with ice cream, whipped cream, caramel and chocolate sauce, yum!

There is also a retail village where you can find souvenirs for the whole family.  Since this is such a popular place, you definitely want to make a reservation at the Disney reservation line: (407) 939-3463.  If you have any special dietary needs or allergies, they are happy to accommodate you; just let them know when making your reservation, which can be made up to 180 days in advance.

See you in the jungle!

Funky Monkey Wine Bar

Try one of Orlando’s hottest dining spots the Funky Monkey. They have two locations – one at Pointe Orlando (International Drive area) and another location in downtown Orlando. I have dined numerous times at the downtown location, and I have not been disappointed on any of my visits.

The International Drive location features a show with your dinner on a regular basis. If female impersonators are appealing to you this is probably one of the best places in Orlando to catch a show and enjoy some delightful cuisine (call for show times and reservations).

Their downtown location has an elegant and yet very comfortable décor that is dimly lit. If you sometimes have issues with reading menus, you will want to be sure and bring your glasses, because on all my visits, I have had to borrow friend’s reading glasses to see the menu. Speaking of the menu, while sushi is a top draw, they also offer some delicious meat and potatoe entrees. If they did not, I would not be a regular, as I am not a fan of sushi. Many of my friends are, and they love their sushi. I, myself, steer more towards tasty comfort food with a unique flair. On my last visit I enjoyed a delicious pork dish with mashed potatoes and veggies.

The service has always been attentive, and the food’s delicious, so if you’re in the mood for something a little different try one of their two locations.

Funky Monkey downtown location is at 912 N. Mills Ave. Orlando, Fl. 32803 call 407-418-9463 and the International Drive locations is at 9101 International Drive Orlando, Fl. 32819 call 407-418-9463 or visit them on the web at www.funkymonkeywine.com
