Great American Pie Festival This Weekend!

The Great American Pie Festival will feature delicious pies.

The town of Celebration, Florida will become the Pie Capital of the World this weekend April 9th and 10th, for the tenth year in a row.   Thousands of pie lovers, tasters and bakers gather together for the Great American Pie Festival. Sponsored by Crisco®, the highlight, as always, will be the Never-Ending Pie Buffet, featuring award-winning pie, ice cream, toppings and beverages. Yummy!

Children can make their own pies and join in the pie decorating, pie scaping, pie tin art and many other pie activities. Adults will enjoy the featured entertainment and baking demonstrations by chefs from across the country. Of course, no pie festival would be complete without a Pie Eating Contest. So join in! Have some delicious pie!

If you are a pie lover, you’ll be treated to sweet offerings by Bakers Square Restaurants and Pies, Bonert’s Slice of Pie, California Raisin Marketing Board, J. Horner’s Desserts, Kroger’s Private Selection, Publix Super Markets, Inc., Rocky Mountain Pies, Smucker’s Toppings, The Folger Coffee Company, Village Inn and Wick’s Pies. Many vendors will be on site too offering their products, recipes and more. Admission is free, although there will be a cost to enjoy the pie buffet.

April Happenings Around O-Town

Well, spring break is almost behind us, and it’s already starting to feel like summer. But, there are still plenty of fun things to do in Orlando in April:

March 29-April 3: Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-in and Expo, Lakeland. Daily air shows! Plus, educational forums, seminars and “hands-on” workshops.

April 1: April Fools Day – don’t get pranked!

April 2: One of Central Florida’s secondary attractions, Fantasy of Flight, will host their 14th annual Mustangs & Mustangs event.

April 10: Re-enactors for the “Civil War Experience” will inhabit the Orange County Regional History Center to share 19th-century experiences (and desserts) with guests.

April 7-10: Celebration Exotic Car Festival, Kissimmee and Celebration. This four-day event showcases North America’s largest collection of exotic cars, race cars and iconic Hollywood movie cars. Benefits Special Olympics Florida. Free admission.

April 9: Jetport Food and Wine Partypart of the Exotic Car Festival, this party features Chefs from all parts of the country, as well as some of the top restaurants and wineries.

April 8-9: Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival, Tavares. . Activities kick off with the Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony, traditional Dragon/Lion dance and banquet. Action-packed contests begin with a crew of 20 paddlers led by the loud, steady beat of the drummer. As the long and colorful boats compete, an ancient rite is revisited, all in the spirit of charity and fun.

April 8-10: Balloon and Sky Fest, New Smyrna Beach. Hot-air balloons rides, sky diving, helicopter rides, music and more. At New Smyrna Airport U.S. Hwy 1. $5 per vehicle.

April 9-10: The 2011 Great American Pie Festival (sponsored by Crisco) at Lakeside Park in Celebration, Yum!

April 15: Moonlight Carillon Concert at Bok Tower Gardens, Lake Wales. Visitors can stroll the meditative garden paths and find a spot to relax and enjoy the hour-long carillon concert under the light of the full moon.

April 16-17: Blues at the Winery, Clermont. For those who enjoy sipping a glass of Lakeridge wine and listening to ‘The Blues’. $2 donation.

April 23: 44th Annual Run Forrest, Run! Easter Beach Run, Daytona Beach. The course will be run at low tide on the hard-packed sand of Daytona Beach. All races start at the Daytona Beach Pier. Registration available by mail, online, in person and on race day.

April 24: Easter Sunrise Service at Bok Sanctuary, Lake Wales. Easter morning worshipers are invited to greet the dawn of this special day atop peninsular Florida’s highest point, as the sunrise is heralded with music from the sanctuary’s 60-bell Singing Tower carillon and the Lake Wales Chorale

Continuing until April 23: Universal Studios Mardi Gras, Orlando. The concerts and Mardi Gras celebration is still going on! You can enjoy this event thru April 23rd.

Continuing until May 15: Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. Spring special event filled with flowers, topiaries, gardens, educational events and live music.

Late April: Watch for the new killer-whale show, “One Ocean” at SeaWorld Orlando.

2011 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

You don’t have to be a gardening enthusiast to appreciate this event; it is an amazing display even for those like me who do NOT have a green thumb. This year, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival flourishes from March 2 to May 15, 2011. This special event features live music and educational events along with beautiful and colorful displays of flowers, gardens, and amazing topiaries

This year’s event blooms with over 75 Disney Characters brought to life in topiary, with new additions that include Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Lotso from Disney·Pixar Toy Story 3 and Lightning McQueen from Cars 2. Some of the nation’s top designers will be on hand to help you plan everything from planting your first garden to enhancing your home’s curb appeal. HGTV stars Vern Yip and Genevieve Gorder, will be on hand, as well as Epcot’s own gardening experts. Be sure to check out festival favorites Bambi’s Butterfly House and Rapunzel’s Tower, inspired by the new animated movie, Tangled.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings during the festival, finish the day off with music at the America Gardens Theatre where you can enjoy tunes from the 1960s and 1970s during the Flower Power Concert Series. This years acts include artists Juice Newton, The Guess Who, Chubby Checker and the Wildcats, and Paul Revere & The Raiders.

Florida resident’s specials include a Wild 4 Disney Pass that gives you 4 days of excitement for just $119, plus tax. That’s one Park per Day for less than $30 per day, plus tax. The 4-Day Wild 4 Disney Pass can be purchased through May 22, 2011.
Note: There is a one week block-out for usage April 17, to April 24, 2011, and the ticket expires May 26, 2011.
